O Testament surgiu em 1983, na região da Bay Area de São Francisco, Estados Unidos, sob o nome de Legacy, contando com os guitarristas Eric Peterson e Derrick Ramirez, o baixista Greg Christian, o baterista Mike Ronchette e o vocalista Steve "Zetro" Souza. No ano seguinte, Derrick cedeu o posto para Alex Skolnick.
Em 1986, o Legacy registrou sua primeira demo e causou uma grande febre entre os tape traders. Houve uma nova mudança na formação, com a troca de Ronchette por Loiue Clemente e Steve Souza, que acabou indo para o Exodus por Chuck Billy, que foi indicado pelo próprio Steve.
Com esse line-up, o grupo passou a se chamar Testament e gravou seu debut em 1987, chamado The Legacy.
Contendo verdadeiros clássicos do Thrash Metal, The Legacy conseguiu colocar a banda em evidência em todo o mundo. O título do disco, produzido por Alex Perialas, obviamente tem conexão com o antigo nome. Com a boa aceitação do material, o grupo partiu para uma turnê com o Anthrax, que originou o EP Live At Eindhoven.
The New Order, de 1988, conseguiu superar as expectativas dos fãs, em razão do sucesso do bombástico The Legacy. O disco que tem composições como Disciples Of The Watch e Into The Pit, se tornou um grandes clássicos do Thrash Metal e um dos melhores álbuns dos anos 80.
Em 1989, com Practice What You Preach, o Testament manteve a base Thrash Metal, mas procurou explorar mais o lado melódico, começando a ressaltar a virtuose do guitarrista Alex Skolnick. O sucesso do álbum rendeu ao conjunto em uma extensa turnê, na qual tocou ao lado de nomes como Judas Priest, Megadeth, Voivod e Anthrax.
Souls Of Black, de 1990, foi um enorme sucesso comercial, seguindo a mesma linha que seu antecessor, porém, cada vez mais o Testament se afastava do Thrash Metal tradicional e apresentava um trabalho mais melódico e menos "sujo".
Essas mudanças na sonoridade ficaram ainda mais evidentes em The Ritual, de 1992, disco que passou definitivamente do Thrash Metal, para um Heavy Metal comercial.
Após a turnê de promoção do álbum, Alex Skolnick e Louie Clemente deixaram a banda por divergências musicais. Alex forma sua própria banda, o Exhibit-A e mais tarde junta-se ao Savatage.
Para os postos vagos vieram o guitarrista Glen Alvelais (ex-Forbidden) e o bateristaJohn Tempesta (ex-Exodus).
Foi essa formação que gravou o EP Return To The Apocalyptic City, de 1993. Glen Alvelais deixa a banda para a entrada de James Murphy (ex-Death, Obituary,Disincarnate, Cancer).
Assim, a banda partiu para a gravação de mais um álbum de estúdio. A desconfiança estava no ar, vez que o álbum anterior, não tinha sido tão bem recebido, a banda não tinha mais o talento de Alex Skolnick e nenhuma formação se estabilizava.
Porém, o conjunto voltaria aos bons tempos com Low, de 1994. A influência que Murphy trouxe de suas experiências profissionais foi positiva e contribuiu para o instrumental mais pesado do disco.
O álbum pode até ser menos veloz, mas os vocais de Chuck estão mais agressivos. Uma surpresa para os pessimistas que achavam que a banda não seria capaz de fazer um bom disco de Thrash Metal.
O que se viu na sequência foi a excelente formação que gravou Low se desfazer, com as saídas de Greg Christian, James Murphy e John Tempesta, sendo esse último substituído por John Dette. Assim, gravam o álbum ao vivo Live At The Fillmore, que sai em 1995. Após o lançamento Dette vai para o Slayer.
Diante de tantas mudanças, em 1996, Chuck Billy informa que ele, juntamente com Eric Peterson e Greg Christian, além do baterista Chris Kontos (ex-Machine Head), formariam um novo conjunto, que se chamaria Dog Faced Gods. A ideia não deu certo e o Testament seguiu na estrada.
Em 1997, lançam o disco Demonic. Neste álbum, Eric assume todas as linhas de guitarra, Derrick Ramirez assume o baixo e Gene Hoglan a bateria. Os vocais de Chuck estão totalmente guturais, sendo que Demonic se aproxima muito de um álbum de Death Metal.
Novas mudanças se fizeram presentes antes da gravação do álbum seguinte, The Gathering de 1999.
Ao criar um line-up de estrelas, todos os fãs esperavam com ansiedade esse lançamento. Além de Chuck Billy e Eric Peterson, estavam o baterista Dave Lombardo (Slayer) e o baixista Steve DiGiorgio (ex-Death, Control Denied, Sadus), além do retorno do guitarrista James Murphy. Com bastante tempo para compor, o Testament voltou à velha e boa escola do Thrash Metal. Chuck desta vez balanceou os vocais e apenas em alguns momentos eleva para o gutural, mas não tão forte como em Demonic. The Gathering é um dos melhores discos de Thrash Metal dos anos 90, talvez o melhor da segunda metade da década.
Após parte da turnê de promoção, Dave cedeu seu posto para Jon Allen e Steve Smyth(ex-Vicious Rumors) entrou no lugar de James Murphy.
Em 2001, Chuck Billy teve diagnosticado um câncer nos testículos, que havia se espalhado por seu peito e coração. Ainda sofrendo com a doença Chuck participou das regravações de vários clássicos para a coletânea First Strike Still Deadly, de 2001, juntamente com Steve DiGiorgio, Alex Skolnick, Eric Peterson, John Tempesta e até Steve "Zetro" Souza, como membro convidado.
Chuck Billy se recuperou totalmente da doença e voltou com tudo em 2003. Em 2005, saíram em uma turnê pela Europa que marcaria o retorno da formação clássica com Chuck, Eric, Alex e Greg Christian, além dos bateristas Louie Clemente e John Tempesta que se revezavam no instrumento.
O sucesso foi tamanho, que o Testament fixou-se com a formação clássica, sendo que a apenas a bateria teve um membro diverso, assumida por Paul Bostaph (ex-Forbidden, Slayer, Exodus e Systematic).
Assim, vem o bombástico The Formation Of Damnation, de 2008, com um trabalho soberbo de Alex Skolnick e de Greg Christian, que voltou em ótima forma, apenas de não gravar nada inédito desde Low. O disco consegue mesclar o Thrash Metal oitentista com o Death Metal da fase de Demonic, num álbum marcado pelo peso e pela precisão e técnica dos músicos.
Em 2011, Gene Hoglan, volta para a banda, sendo que no ano seguinte lançaram o também excelente Dark Roots Of Earth, disco que mantém a sonoridade de seu antecessor, confirmando a razão da banda ser um dos grandes nomes do Thrash mundial. A poderosa turnê desembocou no lançamento de um disco ao vivo intitulado "Dark Roots of Thrash" no fim de 2013.
