Os quatro rapazes da foto acima, talvez sejam os rostos mais conhecidos da história da música ao lado de Elvis Presley, ou como disse John Lennon em 1966: "Atualmente somos mais populares que Jesus Cristo." Tal fenômeno pode ser facilmente explicado se analisarmos a discografia dessa banda, talvez um dos raros casos em que a unanimidade não é burra.
O início dos The Beatles remonta ao ano de 1956, quando John Winston Lennon, até então um estudante sempre envolvido em problemas e fadado a se tornar um delinquente, estava totalmente encantado com o Skiffle (estilo que misturava Blues e Jazz com Folk), que era o estilo mais popular entre os jovens ingleses. Diante disso, em março 1957, decide criar sua primeira banda, a The Quarrymen. Faziam parte do primeiro conjunto de John, os músicos Eric Griffths (violão), Bill Smith (baixo improvisado) e Rod Davis(banjo), além de seu grande amigo Peter "Pete" Shotton (washboard e bateria).
Em julho daquele ano, Paul McCartney (vocal, baixo e guitarra) é apresentado a John Lennon, por um amigo que tinham em comum. Logo em seguida, o música entra para o The Quarrymen.
Em fevereiro de 1958, foi a vez de George Harrison (guitarra) juntar-se à banda trazido por Paul, que o havia conhecido por acaso em um ônibus.
A pedido de Lennon, Stuart Sutcliffe assumiu o baixo em janeiro de 1960. O músico que não faria parte da formação no futuro, tem um papel importantíssimo na história da banda, pois foi que sugeriu o nome The Beatles, segundo as principais fontes.
Como Lennon e McCartney estudavam no Instituto de Liverpool, os músicos acharam inapropriado manter o nome de The Quarrymen (homenagem a antiga escola de Lennon). Vários nomes foram sugeridos, incluindo Johnny and The Moondogs e Long John and The Beatles, até terem se firmado com a idéia de Sutcliffe. Há controvérsias sobre a origem do nome, sendo que John e Paul a atribuem, cada um com uma história diferente.
Nesse momento, a banda que já realizava muitas apresentações, encontrava-se sem um baterista fixo.
Após uma excursão realizada em 1960 em Hamburgo, Alemanha, Sutcliffe conhece a mulher da sua vida e resolve abandonar o barco, sendo substituído por Chas Newby. A esposa de Sutcliffe, Astrid Kirchherr, mudou o visual do marido e logo em seguida de John, Paul e George, criando os penteados que se tornaram uma das marcas registradas da banda.
Os Beatles retornaram a Hamburgo em abril de 1961, com apresentações no Top Ten Club. Enquanto tocavam nesse local, foram recrutados pelo músico Tony Sheridan a agirem como sua banda de apoio em suas apresentações na Alemanha e numa série de gravações.
Era a primeira experiência dos Beatles em estúdio. O LP Tony Sheridan and The Beatles, rendeu o disco de ouro ao músico que era chamado pelos Beatles de "o professor".
Os Beatles voltaram a Hamburgo para diversas apresentações entre abril e maio de 1962. Após a chegada, foram informados que Stuart Sutcliffe estava morto devido a uma hemorragia cerebral.
Ainda abalados com a morte de Stuart e sem perspectivas de progresso profissional, os Beatles continuaram a fazer shows em Hamburgo e Liverpool, mas visivelmente desanimados.
A sorte do conjunto começou a mudar quando conseguiram um contrato de um ano com a gravadora EMI, graças ao empenho de Brian Epstein, manager da banda.
O um dos representantes da gravadora, chamado George Martin, informou aos membros da banda que Pete Best era um baterista fraco e que deveriam utilizar um outro profissional em estúdio, podendo usar Best nas apresentações ao vivo.
Os fundadores da banda, John, Paul e George entraram em consenso e decidiram que Best deveria ser demitido.
A solução foi contratar Ringo Starr, que já era baterista da famosa Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, e que também já havia tocado com os Beatles em algumas apresentações de Hamburgo.
Surgia em Liverpool, uma das maiores bandas da história, e aquela que na minha opinião é amais importante para o Rock'n' Roll, pois tornou o estilo popular e conhecido em todo o mundo.
Em 1963, vem o primeiro disco Please Please Me, que permaneceu no topo das paradas de sucesso por trinta semanas.
Embalado por sucessos como Please Please Me, Love Me Do, P.S. I Love You eTwist And Shout, ambas já fazendo grande sucesso mesmo antes do disco se lançado, não havia como não obter um resultado positivo.
O disco que desbancou Please Please Me do topo da parada de sucessos também foi dos Beatles, With The Beatles, lançado ainda em 1963.
Apesar do sucesso absoluto na Inglaterra e Europa, os Estados Unidos, grande mercado e a nação que definia o mercado mundial de música, se negava a aceitar os Beatles.
Brian Epstein, um dos responsáveis pelo sucesso bombástico da banda, foi designado para mudar a situação do conjunto na América, agendando uma apresentação dos Beatles, no The Ed Sullivan Show, maior programa da TV americana. A apresentação no programa de Ed Sullivan foi um sucesso e o single de I Wanna Hold Your Hand subiu imediatamente ao topo da parada americana. Foi lançado então o disco Introducing The Beatles, na realidade uma compilação de Please Please Me e With the Beatles.
Neste ponto um esclarecimento: antes que digam que na discografia está faltando isso ou aquilo, informo que segui apenas os discos na lançados no Reino Unido, vez que os que sairam na América são os mesmos, porém com outros nomes. Até mesmo no Brasiltemos versões dos discos dos The Beatles, como Os Reis do Iê, Iê, Iê, que é a mesma coisa que o A Hard Day's Night.
Enfim, seria um perda de tempo pra mim que estou fazendo o post e também para que fosse baixar.
Teve início, a Beatlemania, registrada no filme A Hard Day's Night, de 1964.
Em junho de 1965, a Rainha Elizabeth II condecorou os Beatles como Membros da Ordem do Império Britânico.
Em julho do mesmo ano, o segundo filme estrelando os Beatles, Help!, foi lançado. O filme acompanhou o lançamento do álbum homônimo, que serviu como trilha sonora.
Rubber Soul, gravado no começo de dezembro de 1965, foi recepcionado como um grande salto do grupo para a complexidade e maturidade em sua estrutura musical, por conter em suas canções letras e melodias mais elaboradas.
A influência de drogas alucinógenas na inspiração das músicas ficaria mais clara ainda com o lançamento de Revolver, de 1966.
A banda resolve deixar de fazer shows ao vivo em virtude de ser praticamente impossível repetir no palco os resultados de estúdio. A Beatlemania havia acabado e os Beatles eram agora mensageiros do inconformismo da juventude.
A banda decidiu então marcar sua passagem pelo mundo da música com um disco definitivo. A idéia inicial era gravar um álbum duplo totalmente diferente nos mínimos detalhes de tudo o que já houvesse sido feito. O resultado saiu em 1967 com o álbum Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. O disco disputa com Piper At Gates Of Dawn, doPink Floyd, o mérito de ter sido o marco inicial do rock progressivo. Sucesso absoluto de público e crítica.
Ainda em 1967, os Beatles estavam em Bangor, no norte do País de Gales, quando ficaram sabendo que Brian Epstein, o empresário da banda, aquele cujo nome foi muito responsável pelo sucesso do grupo, estava morto, aos 32 anos, devido, segundo o laudo, morte acidental por overdose de Carbitol, medicamento para insônia.
Em finais de 1967, receberam sua grande primeira crítica da imprensa britânica, crítica essa que era um conjunto de opiniões depreciativas sobre o filme de televisão surrealistaMagical Mistery Tour. A trilha sonora de Magical Mistery Tour foi lançada no Reino Unido em um EP duplo, e nos EUA em um LP completo.
Após o lançamento do filme e da trilha sonora os Beatles partiram para uma viagem àÍndia acompanhados de um grupo de amigos para um encontro com o Maharishi. A banda voltaria poucos dias depois desiludida com o guru que mostrou não seguir seus próprios ensinamentos e tentou seduzir uma das mulheres que faziam parte do grupo.
Em meados de 1968 a banda manteve-se ocupada no processo de gravação do álbum duplo The Beatles, conhecido popularmente como White Album.
Essas sessões foram o cenário de desentendimentos entre os integrantes, com Starr deixando temporariamente a banda. Sem Starr, Paul assumiu a bateria e instrumentos de percussão nas faixas Martha My Dear, Wild Honey Pie, Dear Prudence e Back In The USSR.
Em recente entrevista ao Fantástico, Ringo Starr afirmou que se tivesse que escolher um disco dos Beatles para levar para uma ilha deserta, escolheria o White Album. Isso me causou um grande espanto, que passou logo em seguida como Ringo disse: "Escolheria o White Album porque é duplo, não é?".
As dissensões tiveram diversos motivos, sempre muito debatidos: a excessiva presença da nova namorada de Lennon, Yoko Ono, nas gravações; a arrogância de McCartney, que passava a querer ser o líder do grupo; ficou ainda mais difícil o grupo aceitar novas canções de Harrison para serem incluídas em seus álbuns.
Ainda em 1968, para cumprir contratos que prometiam um novo filme longa metragem, contrataram a criação de um desenho animado. O resultado foi o excelente Yellow Submarine. A trilha sonora do filme contava com composições dos Beatles e instrumentais criados pelo produtor George Martin.
Numa tentativa de retomada da espontaneidade e energia do início da carreira Paul McCartney criou o projeto Get Back, que deveria ser composto de um filme e um disco gravados sem truques de estúdio. Após as tomadas iniciais as divergências entre os membros da banda levaram ao abandono do projeto que mais tarde seria aproveitado no lançamento do disco Let It Be.
Em 1969, em meio a um momento de trégua dentro da banda e com os problemas financeiros praticamente resolvidos foi gravado o excepcional Abbey Road. Enquanto todo o mundo aceitava o disco como uma prova definitiva de que os Beatles estavam novamente juntos e durariam para sempre John Lennon e Paul McCartney preparavam seus discos solos. Com o comunicado oficial do fim da banda em 10 de Abril de 1970 a gravadora terminou a mixagem do material gravado do projeto Get Back e lançou o disco Let It Be.
Legalmente, a parceria dos Beatles não foi dissolvida até 1975, embora Paul tenha apresentado uma ação para a dissolução em 31 de dezembro de 1970, efetivamente terminando a carreira em conjunto da banda.
Após o fim da banda, os músicos rumaram em carreira solo, sendo certo que somente John e Paul conseguiram um sucesso próximo daquele alcançado pelo conjunto.
No dia 08 de dezembro de 1980, John Lennon foi assassinado em New York por Mark David Chapman, um fã alucinado do ex-Beatle.
George Harrison faleceu no dia 29 de novembro de 2001 em Los Angeles, vítima de um câncer de pulmão.
Ringo e Paul continuam na ativa, lançando discos e saindo em turnês milionárias, sendo que recentemente estiveram no Brasil.
Embora tenham talento e carisma de sobra, é certo que sempre serão citados e aplaudidos mais por serem ex-Beatles do que qualquer outra coisa.
