A segunda metade da década de 60 marcou uma verdadeira transformação no mundo doRock. Estavam saindo as músicas simples, que falavam sobre amores adolescentes, e começaram a surgir canções mais elaboradas e que traziam novos temas para o estilo musical mais famoso do mundo. Os principais responsáveis por tais mudanças foramThe Beatles e Bob Dylan.
Neste cenário de mudanças rápidas começou a surgir o movimento chamado de Rock Progressivo, marcado por letras profundas, músicas relacionadas entre si, arranjos complexos, instrumentos exóticos e acima de tudo muito experimentalismo. Essa época marcou o surgimento de uma das bandas mais bem sucedidas e influentes de todos os tempos: o Pink Floyd.
O embrião do que viria a ser uma das mais importantes bandas da história foi o grupoSigma 6, criado em 1965 na Inglaterra, formado por Roger Waters (vocal, baixo e guitarra), Rick Wright (teclados, vocal e instrumentos de sopro) e Nick Mason (bateria e percussão), na época alunos da Faculdade de Arquitetura de Cambridge.
Em seguida, Roger "Syd" Barret (vocal e guitarra), se juntou ao conjunto e foi o responsável pela mudança do nome, que inicialmente passou a se chamar Pink Floyd Sound e depois Pink Floyd. O nome da banda é uma homenagem aos músicos de Blues:Pink Anderson e Floyd Council, grandes influências de Barret.
Os primeiros shows do conjunto tentavam reproduzir os efeitos de uma viagem de ácido e foram feitos para um público underground composto de poetas e ativistas políticos. O Pink Floyd ajudava a inaugurar o rock experimental e cunhava o termo psicodelismo para definir o seu estilo de música.
Em 1967, a banda começou no estúdio Abbey Road a gravação de seu primeiro álbum. Curiosamente, no mesmo estúdio e na mesma época os Beatles gravavam o disco Sgt. Peppers, e que divide com o debut do Pink Floyd, The Pipers At Gates Of Dawn, o título de precurssor do movimento progressivo.
The Pipers At Gates Of Dawn teve um enorme sucesso, atribuido principalmente à mente genial de Syd Barret (muitas vezes movidas por LSD), responsável pelos arranjos de estrutura indefinida, cheio de nuances e completamente imprevisíveis.
Os problemas com os alucinógenos e até mesmo mentais, começaram a afetar Syd significativamente, até chegar ao ponto do músico ficar tocando apenas um acorde. A banda percebeu que precisaria encontrar um substituto para Barret, e convidaram o vocalista e guitarrista David Gilmour, antigo companheiro de escola de Roger Waters e Syd Barret.
Com essa formação, lançaram em 1968, o seu segundo álbum: Saucerful of Secrets, embora Barret, não participasse efetivamente do trabalho. Ao contrário do que muitos esperavam, o conjunto emplacou outro grande álbum, apesar da ausência de seu principal compositor. Aos poucos Syd Barrett é deixado de lado até ser definitivamente desligado da banda.
O prestígio da banda cresce nos anos seguintes com os discos Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother e Meddle, além das trilhas sonoras para dois filmes, More e Obscured By Clouds.
Em 1973 a banda grava The Dark Side Of The Moon, um dos álbuns mais vendidos e influentes de todos os tempos.
Sem dúvida, The Dark Side Of The Moon é o melhor trabalho do conjunto, superando seu debut. Ainda assim, o conjunto demonstrou todo o respeito que tinha por Barret e o quanto o mesmo fazia falta, com o disco Wish You Were Here, de 1975, e que é um verdadeiro tributo a Syd Barret.
Animals, de 1977, inaugura a fase de protesto político-social da banda e também marca o início de um predomínio de Roger Waters sobre os outros músicos. O disco é baseado na obra A Revolução dos Bichos de George Orwell e retrata as contradições e injustiças da sociedade capitalista.
Em 1979, lançam outro disco brilhante: The Wall, que é uma opera-rock composta do Roger Waters. The Wall era um tratado sobre a solidão e sobre o poder esmagador do sucesso, mas era antes de tudo uma auto-biografia do que Roger Waters se supunha ser.
A enorme inlfuência de Waters sobre a banda, trouxe-lhe os primeiros atritos, pois o músico havia tomado para si, toda a parte criativa e o direcionamento musical da banda.
Esse situação apenas se agravou em The Final Cut, de 1983, com Waters despendido Rick Wright e tratando os outros membros como simples músicos de estúdio.
Waters compôs o conceito e praticamente a totalidade das músicas, além de ter sido o responsável por todos os vocais. Embora seja um verdadeiro disco solo, o álbum foi lançado como sendo da banda, por determinação da gravadora.
As constantes brigas levaram o conjunto a encerrar suas atividades em 1986.
Inicou-se uma nova briga, dessa vez nos tribunais, com o Waters e Gilmour reivindicando para si o direito de utilizar o nome do conjunto. A justiça decidiu que o nome da banda não pertencia a Roger Waters. Assim, Rick Wright foi trazido de volta e em 1987 foi lançado A Momentary Lapse Of Reason.
Em 1994, num clima de volta triunfal, após alguns anos sem gravar e sem se apresentar ao vivo, a banda volta com The Divison Bell, disco que teve excelente aceitação por parte da crítica e do público. Pouco mais tarde, em 1995 é lançado Pulse, que na minha modesta opinião, é o melhor trabalho ao vivo do Pink Floyd.
Is There Anybody Out There?, é lançado no final de 1999, e se trata de mais um disco ao vivo, da turnê do The Wall, gravado entre 1980/1981.
Após esse lançamento a banda entra em hiato, com Gilmour se dedicando a sua carreira solo, que já estava no terceiro disco, repetindo assim o que Waters vinha fazendo após a sua saída.
Em 2005, para delírio de milhares de fãs ao redor do mundo, o Pink Floyd volta a tocar ao vivo e com sua formação original (exceto Syd Barret). A apresentação ocorreu emLondres no Live 8 e serviu para trazer a banda de volta à midia.
Em 16 de novembro de 2005, o Pink Floyd foi indicado no Hall da Fama da Música doReino Unido por Pete Townshend. Gilmour e Mason compareceram em pessoa, explicando que Wright estava num hospital devido a uma cirurgia no olho e Waters apareceu numa transmissão via satélite de Roma.
No dia 07 de julho de 2006, Syd Barret faleceu. As causas não foram confirmadas. Especula-se que tenha morrido por complicações relacionadas com a diabetes, enfermidade da qual sofria há anos, embora algumas fontes afirmem que ele morreu de câncer.
O tecladista e membro fundador do Pink Floyd, Richard Wright, morreu no dia 15 de Setembro de 2008, aos 65 anos após uma curta batalha contra o câncer.
Atualmente, a banda encontra-se inativa, embora seja previsto para o fim de 2011, uma nova coletânea que se chamará A Foot In The Door.
Após a morte de Richard Wright, ficou mais improvável se imaginar um retorno da banda, até mesmo em razão do sucesso que Gilmour e Waters tem conseguido em suas carreiras solo, mas não custa ter esperança, quem sabe um dia?
