Esta banda norueguesa teve início em 1993 com Shagrath(vocal), Silenoz (guitarra),Tjodalv (bateria), Stian Arnesen (teclados) e Brynjard Tristan (baixo). Apenas 3 anos depois, após o lançamento deStormblast, já gozavam de prestígio em toda a Europa, onde eram destacados como uma das melhores bandas deBlack Metal norueguês. Após algumas mudanças no estilo, passando a ser mais umSymphonic Black Metal, a banda perdeu alguns fãs, porém conseguiu muitos outros (eu por exemplo), e em 2001 com o lançamento do Puritanical Euphoric Misanthropia, eles conseguiram explodir no mundo todo, agora não apenas como uma das melhores banda da Noruega, mas como uma das melhores da Europa. Algumas mudanças no line-up ocorreram, mas todas elas foram para melhor, pois o tecladista Mustis, se mostrou muito versátil e criativo, e foi um dos que mais contribuiu para esse lado "Symphonic" do conjunto. Outra mudança importante foi a entrada do baixista Simen Hestnæs, mais conhecido como ICS Vortex, que também contribui nos vocais (não sei porque, mas esse cara me lembra o Marco Heitala, rs!). Estava pesquisando sobre a origem do nome Dimmu Borgir e descobri, que, foi inspirado em uma árena na Noruega composta de várias cavernas e formações rochosas. Parece que tudo se formou de um lago, do qual fluia lava incandescente. Por este motivo o nome Dimmu Borgir, que quer dizer algo do tipo: "entrada para o inferno". Sinistro!!! Hoje, junto com o Cradle Of Filth, a banda disputa o posto de melhor e mais popular do estilo. Merecido!!!
