Judas Priest

O Judas Priest foi criado em1969, em Birmingham,Inglaterra. Formado original-
mente por Al Atkins (vocal),K.K. Downing (guitarra), Ian Hill (baixo) e John Ellis(bateria), o conjunto escolheu o nome da banda baseado no nome de uma música de Bob Dylan, The Ballad Of Frankie Lee And Judas Priest. Logo em seguida Atkins e Ellis, que logo sairiam da nova formação, dando lugar a Rob Halford e John Hinch. Mais tarde se juntou à banda mais um guitarrista, Glenn Tipton (as guitarras dobradas seriam mais uma marca a ser imitada entre as bandas de Heavy Metal inglesas que se seguiram).
À partir de então, a banda começaria uma trajetória que transformaria num dos maiores nomes da história do Rock, sendo uma das precursoras do Heavy Metal e da NWOBHM(Nova Onda do Metal Britânico) no final da década de setenta. Também foram os responsáveis por retirar o Blues característico da primeira onda do metal britânico formado pela tríade Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath e Deep Purple.
Após o primeiro álbum, Rocka Rolla (1974), o baterista John Hinch abandonou a banda e foi substituído por Allan Moore. Em 1976 gravaram Sad Wings Of Destiny, que trouxe pela primeira vez algum reconhecimento para a banda, algo que só iria aumentar com o disco seguinte, Sin After Sin lançado em 1977. Este disco foi responsável por colocar o Judas nas paradas de sucessos, graças a clássicos como Sinner, Dissident Aggressor(que viria ser regravada pelo Slayer em 1988), Call For The Priest, e Diamonds And Rust, um cover da cantora de Folk Joan Baez. Com Stained Class (1978), destacam-se as faixas Exciter e Beyond The Realms Of Death.
Killing Machine (1979) lançado nos Estados Unidos com o nome Hell Bent For Leather, consolidou a banda de forma definitiva como a maior da NWOBHM, ao lado doIron Maiden. Porém, o aumento da popularidade e o reconhecimento mundial viriam como o trabalho seguinte, British Steel, lançado em 1980. O álbum obteve o 4º posto nas paradas do Reino Unido, além de amplo destaque com o hit Breaking The Law. Mas não só por esta faixa que o álbum conseguiu sucesso, pois traz outros clássicos comoMetal Gods, Living After Midnight, Grinder e Rapid Fire. Em British Steel, as baquetas ficaram sob o comando de Dave Holland (ex-Trapeze) que permaneceria na banda para os discos seguintes.
O auge da carreira internacional do Judas ocorreria com Screaming For Vengeance de1982. Se algo pode sintetizar o que é o genuíno Heavy Metal é a introdução de Screaming For Vengeance, com The Hellion emendada em Eletric Eye. Neste álbum aparecem outros clássicos do Priest, como You're Got Another Thing Comin' e Riding On The Wind.
Defenders Of The Faith de 1984 é considerado um clássico do Heavy Metal, com sons pesados, rápidos e harmônicos.
O álbum Turbo de 1986, trouxe uma pequena derrapada da banda, que investiu em instrumentos eletrônicos. Apesar da imensa vendagem (movida pelos excelentes álbuns anteriores) o disco não foi bem aceito por crítica nem público.
Rain It Down de 1988, foi um retorno à sonoridade e ao visual característico da banda, porém é acusado por muitos de ser um ponto ainda mais baixo na carreira do Judas. Mas isso iria mudar e logo!
Painkiller (1990) é sem dúvida um dos álbum que melhor consegue definir o que é o Heavy Metal. O primeiro passo para o retorno ao auge, foi a substituição do baterista Dave Holland, por Scott Travus (ex-Racer X). Colocando Painkiller para tocar, logo o ouvinte se depara como bom trabalho de Scott na faixa-título, com aquela levada de bumbos rápidas, seguida por riffs pesados e ardidos da dupla Tipton/Downing e a potente voz de Halford na sua melhor forma. Precisa mais? Não precisa, mas o álbum ainda apresenta um bombardeio metálico com Hell Patrol, All Guns Blazing, Leather Rebel, Metal Meltdown, Night Crawler e Between The Hammer & The Anvil. Ainda podemos admirar a maestria de Touch Of Evil. É grande a parcela dos fãs que têm Painkiller como o melhor álbum do Judas Priest e muitos outros julgam este o último grande trabalho da banda.
Em 1992, Rob Halford abandonou a banda para montar o Fight, que a princípio deveria ser apenas um projeto paralelo. Após um longo período de indecisão, em 1996 o Judas Priest anunciou que iria voltar com um novo vocalista e para o lugar de Halford. O escolhido foiTim Ripper Owens, que durante anos participou de uma banda cover do Judas Priest, oWinter's Bane.
Desta forma, o conjunto lança Jugulator em 1997, um álbum muito mais pesado que Painkiller, com influências de Thrash e Industrial Metal. De uma capacidade incrível, o novo vocalista mostrava seu poderio vocal em faixas como Jugulator, Cathedrall Spires,Death Row e Burn In Hell. Alguns setores da imprensa acusaram a banda de ter fugido completamente de seu estilo clássico de fazer hard rock, e outros consideravam um excelente disco.
Apesar de já ter demonstrado todo o seu talento em Jugulator, o teste final para Ripper Owens, viria em 1998, com as gravações de '98 Live Meltdown. Um álbum duplo ao vivo com músicas antigas e canções recentes, todas adotando a nova sonoridade da banda, com forte influência do thrash. Ripper Owens se mostra versátil na interpretação das canções da era de Rob Halford, além de suas próprias músicas - uma de suas contribuições para o Judas Priest mais lembradas é a sua versão para Diamonds & Rust.
Seguindo as mudanças iniciadas em Jugulator, o Judas tende ao metal moderno (até por vezes alternative / new metal), sem olhar para trás. Demolition (2001) marca a consolidação de Ripper Owens como vocalista, e um estilo musical diferente. Novamente, gerou discórdias, com muitos fãs radicais não aprovando o resultado final.
Em 2005, sob ótima recepção e para concretizar a reunião da formação clássica, sai o aguardado novo álbum da banda (com Halford nos vocais), Angel of Retribution é uma volta ao metal mais tradicional e característico da banda.
Fora do Judas, Ripper assumiu o posto de vocalista na banda Iced Earth, permanecendo nesta de 2003 a 2007, quando saiu para o retorno de Matt Barlow. Atualmente integra a banda de Yngwie Malmsteen.
Em 2008, o Judas Priest lança o conceitual Nostradamus, que foi inspirado no profeta de mesmo nome que teria previsto o fim do mundo.
É inegável a importâcia do Judas Priest para o mundo da música, a banda vendeu cerca de 40 milhões de discos em 40 anos de existência, influenciando um número significativo de bandas de Heavy Metal e Hard Rock, como por exemplo Saxon, Slayer, Pantera,Accept, Iron Maiden, Metallica, Death, dentre muitas outras.
